Convert the following into tonnes of oil equivalent.

1. 10000 kg of coal with calorific value of 4000 kcal/kg
2. 10 lac kWh

So to answer this question we must first know what is One tonne of oil equivalent (toe) is?

The primary energy content of all fuels is is generally expressed in terms of tonne of oil equivalent (toe).

So it is the unit which tells us how much energy content any fuel has.

One tonne of oil equivalent (toe) = 1* 10^(7) kcal =11630 kWh =41868 MJ.

So (1) Total calorific value of 10000 kg of coal = 4000 kcal/kg *10000 kg = 4* 10^(7) kcal

Expressing in terms of Tonnes of Oil equivalent(toe) we have

Total calorific value of 10000 kg of coal= 4* 10^(7) / 1* 10^(7) = 4 toe.

(2) 1 tonne of oil equivalent = 11630 kWh.

We have given 10 lac kWh which when converted to toe will be (1* 10^(6) / 11630 ) toe =85.984 toe.
